Is it true that you only need to change car engine oil twice a year when using Synthetic oil?

Depends on the car and the miles you drive and the type of driving and the climate conditions etc. etc. etc. for some people once a year is enough which would be the very minimum.

Have you read your owners manual?

Don't believe all the oil myths such as the 3000 mile oil change myth or the dark oil myth or the thicker is better myth.

What your grandfather was taught is one thing but this is the 21st century and both oils and vehicle engines have changed. With some rare exceptions, things are not what they use to be.Is it true that you only need to change car engine oil twice a year when using Synthetic oil?
Severe service is also known as city driving. It is always recommended that you change your oil every 3,000 mi. However, many synthetic oils are now claiming longer service intervals (anywhere from 3,000 to 7,500 mi). It is still recommended you change your oil and filter, regardless of what type it is, at 3K just to drain the contaminants (metal shavings, dirt, etc.) that will be present and possibly damaging to your engine. Is it true that you only need to change car engine oil twice a year when using Synthetic oil?
I would stretch the change interval to 5000 mi. if I had a new vehicle. Liz' answer is pretty good, as are the others. Synthetic oil gives superior lubrication and prevention from wear but still needs changed regularly along with the filter. I just run good quality crude (with good filters) in my wheels and change @3K.
I've changed all of my vehicle engine oil every 9,000 miles or one year (whichever occurs first) since 1970 with Mobil One synthetic oil and NEVER had an engine problem with over 200,000 miles on every one of 10 engines. However, that assumes the engine is running properly and your not doing all ';short trip'; driving. In my opinion, there are many benefits to synthetic oil AND less frequent oil changes is positively one of them! Even petroleum based oil changes are often 7,000 miles in many car's owner's manuals (not ';severe service';), so why is it hard to believe that a much better oil can be changed at 9,000 miles? (or even longer)?
nope but you can run it longer don t mean you should run it longer doing so defeats propose of using it you can look up test they have done mobil one says oil lasted 10,000 mile before it lost or it failed to protect which you dont want to fail so replacing it shoul dbe done but say if you done your regular oil at 3000 to 5000 miles right way then 5000 to 10000 might be ok wouldnt push on pass that much and lose the motor
No, it's not true because contaminants still get into your engine and synthetic oil still breaks down like regular oil. You should change the oil as often as the manufacturer suggest in your owner's manual. There are many benefits to synthetic but less frequent oil changing isn't one of them.
Depends on the brand of oil and the mileage . Some brands of synthetics actually give you a mileage to go to before draining . In between they tell you to replace filter at certain mileage and top off . Don't be confused by color as syn gets blacker quicker than regular oil .
There are only two manufacturers that claim you can change oil every 15,000 miles, they are Mobile One (extended performance) and AMSOIL. I don't know anybody who does this and I certainly wouldn't, not even in my 10 year old car.
