I brought my car in for an oil change today, and the mechanic told me that the coolant?

is brown..He said that there is green antifreeze and red antifreeze and whoever filled it last might have mixed them...

Is this possible?? Would it be brown? What else could cause this?I brought my car in for an oil change today, and the mechanic told me that the coolant?
Rust in system. Change antifreeze and oil change places. A good shop would identify problem and then correct it with you approval. Red and green do make brown, in Art.I brought my car in for an oil change today, and the mechanic told me that the coolant?
It depends on the car year and model. The older cars use green antifreeze, newer such as GM and Chrysler may use orange coolant. Depending on the make of the vehicle, your car may need red coolant. If it is brown, you may need a coolant system flush. Coolant should be changed every 3-5 years.
It's no big deal. He's trying to get a coolant change out of you and probably $300-400 to do a job you could do for $5.

How often should i change the oil in my car?

I have a Mercedes C230Kompressor. I just drive to school, work, and home, not a lot of driving. How often should I change it?How often should i change the oil in my car?
every 3 months regardless of miles due to your short trip driving. How often should i change the oil in my car?
It's a pain to be keeping track of the 3,000 miles, no one does. What I do is change the oil 4 times a year, at the end of march, june, sept, and december.

And the oil is not changed by how much you drive, short trips put more wear and tear on the engine than a lot of highway miles.
every 30000 miles. if you are using synthetic mercedes benz oil then 40000 - 60000 miles.
Every 3,000 miles
3000 mi.I wish I can change my oil fter 30000,40000-60000 mi.
check forums for the manufacturer of your car.

but 3k miles or 3 months whichever comes first is general
Check your owner's manual. The old standard was 3,000 miles but many cars now say to go longer. A Civic that I am working on has a sticker that says every 7,500 miles. If you want to take really good care of your car change it at what the manual says for ';extreme service';. Usually you'll be just fine if you change it somewhere between the ';extreme service'; and the normal mileage it states.
The common answer is every 3,000 miles. I would check the owners manual it should tell you how often to change the oil

  • How often should I change the oil in my car?

I drive a 2006 Civic. The owners manual just says it should go to the dealer every 10000km for servicing. Should i do an oil change at that time only, or sooner? How often should I change the oil in my car?
Most newer cars also come with a Maintenance Guide which is more detailed than the owners manual and will usually explain at least two different maintenance schedules to you -- basically one for moderate to heavy usage and one for light to moderate. If you did not get one ask your local factory authorized dealer that provides service for your vehicle to provide you a maintenance schedule that follows factory guidelines.

If you do not want to think about it and make sure that you maximize the engines life, every 3000 miles is usually suggested. If however you live in a warm non-dusty place like Florida and just drove your car casually most manufacturers suggestions would be to change your oil every 7500 miles. So make sure you consult your factories suggestions based on your driving patterns, you may be able to save a lot of money and do a little to help save the planet by not dumping more oil than you need to.How often should I change the oil in my car?
sooner.. i have an 06 altima and they have me get my oil changed every 5,000 miles, most cars need oil changes every 5,000 miles or less
oil should be changed every 3 months or 3000 miles. whichever comes first
Once every 3000 miles or once every 3 months. Whichever comes first.
The first oil change should be at or around 500 miles. After that every 3000 miles is recommended. What this is in kilometers i don't know.
every three thousand miles and rotate your tires every five thousand-these are just basic maintenance things to do always!
Follow the owners manual. Jiffy Lube and similar companies did a good job of selling the 3 months or 3000 miles (approx. 5000 km) myth. Creates more business for them.
If you want maximum life and performance not more than 3,000 miles between oil changes! Forget the owners manual, that was specifically written with the intention of selling you another new vehicle within 3-5 years!
Actually it depends on how you use your car..If you make a lot of short trips then a 3000 mile oil change would be recommended...but if you do a lot of long trips then you can probably go another 1000 miles between oil changes.... always use a good quality oil and filter...
It depends on a car and on the quality of oil as well. On average, its every 7000 kilometers, but with very good quality oil it can go up to 10 or 15 thousand kilometers. thats what i do:)
What you should do is look at the specs on the oil that you will put into your car. You owner's manual will recommend a certain type of oil. This oil has been tested and it will give you a certain mileage at which point you will have to replace. Always follow the schedule because if you don't as the viscosity in the oil begins to break down, your engine will pay the price in the long run.

How often should you change the oil in a car with high mileage?

I have a 2000 Mazda 626 with over 125,000 miles on it. How often should I change the oil?How often should you change the oil in a car with high mileage?
1250.000 mile are not a lot. 2500-3000 miles is

fact standards or 3 monthsHow often should you change the oil in a car with high mileage?
The same as you do with one with low mileage.
every 3,000 miles without fail, AND use synthetic ';for high mileage'; oil...
they put a sticker on your window when you get your oil changed that tells you when to come back in by...
Have your oil changed every every 3000 kilometers or if you seldom travel have the oil replaced every three months.
every 3,000 miles. there are oils available for cars with high mileage. check into it.
4k miles because thats what a 25 year Mercedez-Benz mechanic told me.

He said that by 3k miles the oil isn't all used up so its a waste of money.

He also told me to always get the same oil, because mixing oils can cause chemical reactions.

MAKE SURE TO GET AN OIL THAT IS FOR HIGH MILEAGE VEHICLES.
every 6,000 miles is probably OK if you are an average driver. if you are driving stop and go in a dirty city maybe more often. change the oil and air filter too. some people would say 3,000 but for an old car that isn't worth that much i don't think i'd bother doing that. i've had good luck with synthetic oils, they seem to last longer, but they can cost more. also, if the car is getting old some people think heavier oil (higher number on the bottle) helps hold things together. so you could get 30 weight instead of 10/30

probably more concern is changing your timing belt every 70,000 miles or so. if you dont change that you could get major engine damage. you will also need a new water pump and alternator at about 160,000 miles.

also be sure to watch out for battery dying, brakes wearing out, tires going bald, etc. when your car breaks down you will be really annoyed.
3000 miles is normal BUT it depends on your driving habbits if you do alot of stop and go city driving do it about every 2500 miles if alot of interstate driving you can wait till about 4000 miles also if its over 75000 miles i recomend Valvoline Max in the red bottle its for engines with 75000 miles + GREAT OIL!
3,000 miles is the recommended mileage however I think that has increased as of the past few years to about 4,000. To be safe I would stick to doing it every 3,000 miles or thereabouts.
it depends on the oil you use. standard oil has a change interval of 3000 miles. an example of premium oil would be Royal Purple Synthetic, which has a change interval of 12000 miles. it costs more, but is obviously worth it. it will also give you more horsepower (dyno proven) 1-2 hp.
    Every 3,000 miles
I would recommend every 3,000 miles. You do not need any expensive oil, only if your car runs a high compression engine, or if its turbo charged. Regular oil is just fine for your Mazda.
every 3k miles. there are some oils that are made for higher mileage cars. Try those. They coat the internals better
every 3000 miles..and use an oil for higher mileage engines

edit: love the thumbs down....your car has 125k on it..most cars these days and i said MOST not all have a lifespan of about 150K so your car for the most part has seen its better days to prolong your car from this point..you should get it done every 3000 your engine is old and its at a point when it will have metal fragments etc that start to flake into the oil..to better lube older engines they have come up with an oil for cars with mileage 75K and over..its a good idea to start using this kind of oil...it gives it that extra coating on all those metal parts that the engine needs at this point..i too have an older car mine is a 98 ford escort it has 143 something on it..i do use high mileage oil and get it changed every 3000...my car has no oil leaks(knock on wood) it still has its original clutch which too me is a big thing because i learned to drive a standard with this car..point being take care of your car and you can make it exceed its expected lifespan

If I take my car to walmart to get an oil change, can I pick the EXACT type of oil I want them to use?

    I want 5w30 high mileage.

Can I just buy the oil from walmart and have them change it? how does it work?If I take my car to walmart to get an oil change, can I pick the EXACT type of oil I want them to use?
sure!, you can buy any kind of oil you want and filter too, and they will change it for you.If I take my car to walmart to get an oil change, can I pick the EXACT type of oil I want them to use?
cral z - the reason it was done this way is because the techs dont have the ability to mark oil as customer provided ur best bt is to pick the standard bottled oil change curently 30 $ but if u dont ask for bottled the pick the type u wantu will get either 5 or 10 w 30 penzoil = their bulk oil Report Abuse

if they offer that particular oil then yes you can request to use it. some places offer only 10w30 or 10w40 and make you pay more for 20w50 or 5w30 (i used 20w50 in my high mileage car and it worked great). i don't think you can buy the oil and have them put it in for you... you might want to check into other oil change places, like jiffy lube or super lube, if walmart doesn't offer the oil you want to use.
I tried that but they wanted to charge me the same price as if they did it themselves, so basically I would have to pay $20 for the oil + $30 for the oil change = $50, instead of just the $30 for them to do it.
    yes.

How often should you change the oil in your car?

I have heard it is suggested to change it every 3 months or 3000 miles and I am curious if it is really neccesary to do it that often? Thanks for your advice. How often should you change the oil in your car?
Yes, you do need to change it every 3,000 miles. I remember my father telling me years ago that it used to be like 9,000 mi or something. lol. The reason you need to change the oil every 3,000 is because the ';Viscosity'; of the oil. Meaning it BREAKS down after prolonged use. When you first put oil into the engine after an oil change, the oil is a thick and light gold color. After a couple of thousand miles the oil becomes a lot less thick and your pistons don't have as much ';Cushion'; or ';Support'; as fresh oil has. For example, 2% milk in comparison to Butter Milk. lol. I researched this a bit on the net and here is the most complete explanation I could find for you. Here is the link.

Hope I explained somewhat. Have a great day.How often should you change the oil in your car?
Read the manual. Follow the mfg's guideline on change interval %26amp; oil viscosity. Meet the API specs. - www.api.org Report Abuse

You can go somewhat longer if you use synthetic oil. Report Abuse

keep in mind the suggestions for ';viscosity breakdown'; are given by??? The oil company. Report Abuse

the oil companies want you to, but reality is it isnt necessary. Report Abuse

Actually, I know old dog mechanics that will tell you to NEVER change the oil. Instead, simply add new oil from time to time to keep the oil level up to the necessary levels. It's the particulate in that builds up in the oil that provides the best protection. Report Abuse

Of course, this is a direct violation of most warrenties. Also, the manufacturer will specify when to change the oil. If the warrenty is your issue, then change your oil based on their schedule requirements, at least until the warrenty is up. Some manufacturers list it 3000, 5000 and even 7500. Report Abuse

no its not. i change it every five thousand or so miles, but it also depends on the condition of your engine if its an older engine 100k miles or more it will break down faster than a newer engine, you can tell what condition your oil is in simply by pulling out the dip stick and if it is still clear your good but if it is black as coffee you need an oil change
If you do a lot of stop and go driving then you need to change it more often 2500-3000 miles. If most of the driving is on the highway you could get away with every 3 months. The best way to be sure is to check your oil regularly. If you check in once a week you will be able to tell when it starts to turn darker in color. Then you could calculate what was best for you.
It depends on how much you drive it. If it is a daily driver, change it at 3000. If it sits a lot, for instance; I have a truck that may be driven 1000 miles a year.( Yes; Year) In a case similar to this you can wait 6 months but I would never wait longer because of the condensation (water) that collects in the oil pan. Hope this helps.
I've always done 3 months or 3,000 miles (usually the latter because I drive a lot). I have a '97 Honda Civic with nearly 200,000 miles and it runs like a champ.
3000 miles or three months, which ever comes first
Every 3000 mi. The manufacturer will tell you every 5000 mi so you can come back to them when the problems begin.
Generally, a good rule is to change it every 3000 miles, if possible. I wouldn't go over 5000 miles, then you are really pushing the envelope.
it all depends on the nature of your, driving. is it normal driving, maintaining speeds of 55 to 65 mph, with out stopping, no ac, nothing in the trunk, or is it severe driving, around town, grocery shopping, dropping the kids off at school, sitting in traffic for 30 minutes, just waiting to get home. typicaly. normal driving, which is very rare, can go 5000 miles, but every one else can usualy only go 3000 miles or less ( three months figure that one out)
You can actually go 7500 miles between changes according to newer vehicle manufacturers. The people who actually make the bottled oil say 3000,tops.Whatever you choose, make sure to change the filter.
Okay,.An oil change for a car could be looked at as the equivalent need in the human body for water.

Water keeps all your blood and tissues free of toxins and keeps you from being constipated too, right? keeps everything moving where it needs to go.

The oil change for a car is necessary for the same principle all the pistons and valves to move freely within the motor. They do this at a very fast rate..if the oil within the motor becomes too dirty it slows down this function and then you have more performance problems.

The life of your car is dependent upon the oil changes every 3000 miles. It's good preventive health!!!

How often should I change the oil of a car in storage?

I have an 86 1/2 Toyota Supra that I keep in a garage. I last changed the oil in July 2005. I haven't driven the car in 6 months, and I'm wondering what I should do to keep the car from deteriorating. How often should I change the oil of a car in storage?
You need to do more than start it now and then. You need to run it up to operating temperature for a while. The thing that kills stored cars is condensation in the engine.

That condensation is why you still need to change the oil once a year and take it for a drive every couple of months. How often should I change the oil of a car in storage?
3 times a year but if your not driving the WHY
If you're not going to start it regularly, you should disconnect the battery, remove the spark plugs, and squirt a little engine oil onto the tops of the cylinders. Also, you can jack up the car, removing some pressure from the tires, and set it on blocks to save the tires. At least once every few months, you should go and crank the engine, in order to keep the cylinder walls lubricated, so they don't rust. Add a fuel stabilizer to the gas so that it doesn't deteriorate. When you intend to drive it again, replace the plugs, and add fuel dryer to the gas. Let it idle unti it becomes warm before driving, and don't forget to reinflate the tires, and take it off the blocks.
you should start it once a month
    sell it..
nothing much, just start the car every 3 months or so if you can. Change the oil about every year and a half.

How OFTEN should I change the oil in my car?

Forget about mileage. Let's focus on time.

Is there an oil out there that lasts a year?

I only drive 3000 miles per year.

My owner's manual says every 5000 miles or six months, whichever comes first.

The car has 93,000 miles on it. I heard that synthetic oils are not good choices for cars with high mileage. How about synthetic blends?

All I want is an oil that is suitable for my car and will maintain its properties for a year given that it's rarely driven. How OFTEN should I change the oil in my car?
I'll agree with hobbabob - it depends on climate and if you make short trips often or long trips rarely. In good conditions and infrequant, long trips, you can get away with longer change intervals. How OFTEN should I change the oil in my car?
Even if you only drive 3,000 miles a year the lubrication/detergent properties of your engine oil will break down. For my customers I recommend every 3,000 miles or 6 months. I have 2 vehicles that get driven no more than 2,000 miles a year, this is the schedule I follow.

On the same note with the milage your car accumilates over 1 year I suspect you do mostly very short drives. you should take your vehicle out for a fair drive (at least 15 miles) at least once a month or so to get the operating components and fluids up to temperature. Short trips that do not allow your car to warm up to normal operating temperature tend to cause condensation (of water) in the crankcase.
Here鈥檚 what to do: Check your owner鈥檚 manual and follow the manufacturer鈥檚 recommendation. If it says change the oil every three months or 3,000 miles and you haven鈥檛 traveled 3,000 miles in that time, change it anyway. But, I think you鈥檒l find that the recommendations are much longer than that. For instance, Acura suggests that I change the oil in my car every 7,500 miles or one year.
3,000-5,000 miles change your oil!! There is nothing wrong with synthetic oils. My suggestion for you would be to use something for higher mileage vehicles. They have an additive that protects against friction for older or higher mileage vehicles.

I have an '03 Kia Spectra %26amp; use it just for city driving for errands, doctor's appt., etc..I just wonder how often it needs it.How often do I need an oil-change for a 'low usage' car..?
    I have the same car.

Twice a year would be OK.

Schedule them for April and October.

Most answers are correct about moisture build up.

I don't like synthetic oils. Mix regular oil with them and you get epoxy.

5W-40 oil is too thin. (engine burns it)

    I use 10W-50.

Make sure oil filter is changed.

    And the air filter.

    Install Platinum spark plugs. ';Bosch';

Change spark plugs about 20,000 miles. How often do I need an oil-change for a 'low usage' car..?
I have the same situation with my cars and I personally change the Mobil One synthetic oil and oil filter once per year. I typically put maybe 5 thousand miles on the car in one year. However if you do a lot of short trip driving, then that's called ';severe service'; in your owner's manual and if your using conventional motor oil, you need to change the oil and filter every 6 months or 5 thousand miles, whichever comes first in my opinion.
I recommend 2,000 to 3,000 miles on any car. If it is only used for short trips (less than a mile each way) 2,000 miles. If longer trips 3,000 miles. Short trips cause condensation that contaminates the oil and can cause premature failure.
Short trips are the worst thing for your oil.

If your engine never gets to full operating temperature, water collects in the oil and mixes with combustion byproducts to pruduce corrosive acids and sludge. So, in this case, your oil must be changed every 2 to 3 months.

If you start the engine and drive for at least 15 minutes, the engine will get hot enough to evaporate the water. Ths will allow you to extend the oil change interval to twice per year.
Am I to assume that you don't have an owner's manual?

You can download one here: http://manualspace.com/2003-spectra-spec鈥?/a>

You should use the maintenance schedule that is for severe use but I don't think Kia specifies different maintenance for normal or severe use. Better to err of the safe side. [Is there a safge side with a Kia?]
Short trips are harder on an engine than long road miles because water can form in the crankcase, and without the engine warming up enough to rid itself of the water, it causes corrosion. Most authorities say 3000 miles or 3 months, whichever comes first.
I have a pickup, mid 2000, with 128K on it. at 110K, the oil pan was checked by the mechanic and he proclaimed it sludge free.

I change my oil every 6-7k, using synthetic, Mobil 1 or Castrol Synthetic.

I did not do as well with non-synthetic oil.
The common recommended intervals are 3000 miles or 6 months, whicever comes first.

What maintenance (other than an oil change) should be done on a car that has not been driven in 2 years?

2004 Pontiac Vibe with 30000 miles. I let it run for 15-20 minutes every few weeks, but have not been on the road. What maintenance (other than an oil change) should be done on a car that has not been driven in 2 years?
I would check the brakes as well. What maintenance (other than an oil change) should be done on a car that has not been driven in 2 years?
Odd as it may seem, rodents like to bury nests behind cabin air filters and the regular engine ';flat'; air cleaner in the standard cold air box. Check them both before putting the car on the road.

No doubt the gasoline in the tank is now very stale. Before filling the tank add a can of 3M Total Fuel System Cleaner or Chevron Rro-Gard Fuel Injector Cleaner then fill the tank with 93 octane fuel. Plan on a long hard extended drive to get the best cleaning properties of either of these products.

You may think it's silly to be using 93 octane fuel at this time. The reason is the present fuel in the tank has lost much of the octane leval during it's resting period. To prevent the anti-knock sensor from retarding the ignition for your first long hard drive the higher octane fuel will prevent spark-knock and pre-ignition while the fuel injector cleaner is in the tank.

Check both of the side termanal connections of the battery by disconnecting and cleaning with baking soda if necessary. Coat the surfaces of these connections with silicone ignition grease to prevent buildup of battery corrosion and dirt. If you still have the standard AC-Delco battery there's no way to check the distilled water level in the cells. If not check and fill if needed.

If the car has been stored inside the wiper blades are most likely OK for now. Be aware that the rubber blades degrade rapidly with age. For the money and hassle it pays to replace them every 6 - 9 months with regular Anco blades from Walmart. Fancy high dollar blades are no bargan in the long run. I've found it's best to feed cars fresh inexpensive blades more often and leave the expensive car magazine blades on the shelf.

Please don't skimp on the quality or proper viscosity or motor oil for your car. It should have 5W-30 year round. Personally I like Mobil1 in small hard working 4 cylinder engines. The very best oil filters are the following: Wix, AC-Delco, NAPA (made by Wix), Carquest's best (made by Wix) and Purolator Gold.

Check brake fluid leval and automatic transmission fluid leval with engine running and hot in neutral.

Check tire air pressures and lean toward the pressure printed on the tire, not the door jam.
    oil like u said

the fuel because it will all be dirty and crappy now

    water system

brake fluid might be an idea

de-flate and then inflate your tyres

transmission fluid and anythin else to do with the transmission system any hydraulic fluid etc

Flush the cooling system and change transmission fluid and filter change, (after puting on road for about a week), after that you should be good.

I let my car go too long without an oil change. Should I change it again in 1000 miles to be safe?

It's a '95 Mazda Protege, and it was 8000 miles since the last change, I just changed it the other day. I know that's a terrible idea, and I was wondering whether I would be doing any good to change it again soon, in case the new oil I just put in is going to get dirty quickly, considering how long it had been. Or, is there something else I can do to try to minimize the damage I've done?I let my car go too long without an oil change. Should I change it again in 1000 miles to be safe?
Ok...I work at a oil and lube shop and I think you should change it earlier and go ahead and pay for an ENGINE FLUSH service.

We sell a BG product that comes in a kit. We check the oil level on the car to make sure it's full than add the cleaner to the vehicle and let it run for 15 minutes or so.

Than we shut the car off and pull the plug and let the oil and cleaner drain out. Than before putting the plug back in we flush it with a qrt or oil to make sure all the sludge and carbon build up comes out. Than the plug gets put back in and we add the oil and an oil conditioner that protects the engine from future sludge build up.

We recommend that the service be done every 30,000 miles or whenever the customer goes to long on the Oilchange. (over 3,000 miles.)

After you get this done it would be a good idea to put the oil condtioner in every other oil change to keep it clean until it's time for the next engine flush.

When you go for your next oil change ask for a BG engine flush. I provided a link if that helps. This service helps, I do it on my own car.

If they don't carry BG products find a shop that does. Its pretty good stuff for your car.I let my car go too long without an oil change. Should I change it again in 1000 miles to be safe?
You haven't done any damage to your engine. I would change the oil filter in another 2000 miles, though. I follow the procedure the military does: Change the filter with every other oil change. I have done that for the last 30 years and my vehicles have lasted just fine.
there is one thing you can do. to clean the inside of your motor put in a pint of automatic transmission fluid in the oil run it no more than about 100 miles it will clean out allot of the sludge in the motor. but make sure you change the filter at the same time.
you can go 5000 in that car under normal conditions......8000 is pushing it i would change it again cuz its cheap then get on a regular schedule
as long as you have oil in your car the car will be ok. but i suggest changing every 3500 mile. you dont want to sludge your engine!!
No need - just change it at regular intervals in the future.
just chage it every 3000, and use maybe a better quality oil since ur car is 14 years old

How frequently to change the oil in a car driven on the weekends only?

I only drive my 2001 Toyota Solara on the weekends (I travel for work 100%, so get a ride to the airport, leaving my car at home).

On the weekends, it is primarily 'in town' driving, not highway. I was looking at my 'next oil change' sticker, and realized that while it was coming up on 3 months, I had driven less than 1000 miles.

So by what measure should I change the oil?How frequently to change the oil in a car driven on the weekends only?
You don't need to change it after only three months, with that minimal mileage you described. ';3 months or three thousand'; is a great marketing ploy by the quickie lube guys, but it's a crock.

If you're only doing 300 miles/month, get the oil changed every six months...the engine will be fine, and you'll save time and money, and not be wasting oil.

Army maintenance schedules don't apply to civilian vehicle use, lol...they aren't using the oil-analysis program anymore (to determine when to change oil)??

Oil does change over time, with condensation, acids, etc., even if the engine isn't being operated, the oil is subject to deterioration. You could probably leave it in and change it once a year and be ok, but you'd be pushing it...six months will be the safe bet.How frequently to change the oil in a car driven on the weekends only?
Toyota suggests 5,000 mile oil changes, however in your case short hop driving is a bear on these engines. Long extended drives gets the engine oil hot and heat drives off moisture and blow-by contamination. If I were you I'd do one of two things.

#1. If you are using conventional 5W-30 engine oil shorten the drain interval periods to 3,000 - 3,500 miles regardless of time, days or months.

#2. If you really want to put your mind to rest most Toyota dealers have Mobil1 full synthetic motor oil. You can very safely go to the Toyota factory recommended 5,000 mile oil change. If The Toyota Dealership does not happen to have it, any Walmart, NAPA, Advance Auto has this brand. Buy it there and have a Toyota dealer change it for you. Never on this green earth trust a ';fast oil change joint'; to change your oil, too many mistakes and horror stories.

I have a Toyota also and I do the Mobil1 motor oil. It's so much superior to the regular oil and prevents the recent engine oil mess that Toyota is having.
every 3 months or 3,000 miles whichever comes first.....you may not have 3,000 miles but over time the oil will break down due to contaminents......also cars that sit alot and don't get driven will accumulate water in the oil due to condensation....spend the twenty bucks every three months and that solara will last you a very very long time!!!!!
Well, the oil companies would love to have you change your oil every 3 months, or 3,000 miles but it's not necessary.

For as little as you drive the car, every 6 months should be fine. Check your owner's manual.
Go by the three months. Oil can break down after a period of time. I know in the Army we changed oil every three months an so of the vehicle's had never be moved.
the time limit can be pushed up to 6 months the milage point should always be around 3 thousand...If I was working for Mobil I'd say 3 months and alot of people believe it...
go by the mileage usually every 2500 to 3000 miles change the oil.
I would go my mileage as oil does not breakdown sitting in the oilpan.

Can I change my car's oil to another brand after using only one for three years?

It's Toyota Corolla 2002.Can I change my car's oil to another brand after using only one for three years?
Changing brands is not an issue... changing viscosity, or types can be an issue. 10w40, SAE 40 are two different viscosities and one is a detergent additive. Changing can lead to gasket failure. Keep with manufacturers recomended type but brand, Synthetic/ synthetic mix will not factor into this.

One disclaimer though, try to go with a name brand, this ensures some sort of quality control. No name, dollar store brands tend to have wide fluctuations in their consistency. Can I change my car's oil to another brand after using only one for three years?
The brand of oil does NOT make any difference, they all have to meet certain specifications. All that matters is that you use the right grade recommended in your owners manuel.
yes, oil is oil. There really isn't any difference from one brand to the other.
Yes you can. But it depends if the car manufacture recomends.
The ';you can't switch back after you go synthetic'; is a load of crock....

    Yes, perfectly fine to switch.....

(btw, napas oil is made by valvoline, a oil found to be THE lowest oil in the additive department, just enough to pass the api tests)
No problem, change the filter too
Yes you can. I use napa
If you are planning to keep your car and want to take the best care of its engine, I recommend ( and use nothing but ) AMSOIL synthetic motor oil, transmission fluid and, even gear lube in the differential. Its slightly more expensive than, say Mobil 1 or Castrol but, definitely worth every penny. Once you try it, you'll agree too. Just a few of the benefits of AMSOIL .... Lower operating temperature ( mine went down 10 - 15 degrees ), Less engine noise ( valves and lifters ), Increased MPG ( I added an average of 2 MPG ) and, $$$ savings ( both from the increased MPG and ';extended drain interval'; with AMSOIL ).

Check this site out for more information and online ordering if youre ready to try it for yourself. EVERYONE has their own opinion of which oil is best but, everyone who has tried AMSOIL ( that I know of ) has stayed with AMSOIL.

    www.firstandfinestsynthetics.com/

In general, if you use a conventional motor oil you can use any other brand of conventional motor oil of the same viscosity ( like 5W30 or 10W30 for your application ) however, once you switch to a synthetic motor oil ( again, of the same viscosity ) you MUST NOT switch to a conventional motor oil again ( you can though switch brands of synthetic oil, if you want to ).

As for switching from Synthetic back to conventional motor oil, try it if you like ( as 572ci says is ok ) but, its your engine.
Yes. Any quality oil will be just fine. I would recommend full synthetic if you plan on keeping your vehicle for a long time.
Yes you can. Valvoline is good. Or Quaker State is good too.The brand doesn't really matter. Just try and use the same weight.
yes, and the best brand to use is quaker state
YES,YOU CAN.AS LONG AS U CONTINUE TO USE THE

MANUFACTURES SPECIFIED OIL WEIGHTS AND CHANGE THE FILTER.REMEMBER ITS ONLY A NAME OF THE BRAND.NOT THE OIL ITS SELF.SOME THINK THIS MATTERS.READ THE BOTTLE.EACH CO PUTS THEIR ON ADDITIVES IN
YES u can if ur car is not under warrenty As for brands i trust Val.

only some brands do make a differense and i race alot on dirt so i trust Val for many reasons.make sure u choose a Quilty filter as well

How do I undo the sump nut on my car to change the engine oil?. It is on really tight.?

It was tighened last time by a garage. How do I undo the sump nut on my car to change the engine oil?. It is on really tight.?
make sure your turning it to the left and if you have to, get a breaker bar and socket to get it off and if that doesn't work get a 2 or 3 foot piece of pipe that will fit over your breaker bar to give you extra leverage. How do I undo the sump nut on my car to change the engine oil?. It is on really tight.?
make sure you use the exact size spanner or socket for it so you dont round it off, then tap the spanner with a hammer to get it started.

Obvious thing but be sure youre tapping it anticlockwise as sometimes its deceiving when your lying on your back!
Turn it counterclockwise. Use a breaker and a socket that fits perfectly. Don't round the nut by trying to use vise grips or a pipe wrench. Unless you buy a new sump nut. Then anything can go.
    Try harder.

  • Do I have change the oil filter when I change my car engine oil?

you don't have to but it's best if you do as if you don't your circulating about a qt. of old used oil into your engine with your new oil.Do I have change the oil filter when I change my car engine oil?
the 3000 mile oil change is pretty standard. the only time you could extend this is if your vehicle sees mostly smooth interestate driving. But every time you change your oil, you need to change the filter. If you use some of Mobil 1's 5000 or 15000 mile oil, you still need to change the filter every 3000 miles.Do I have change the oil filter when I change my car engine oil?
yes. Truthfully, depending on the car and type of oil you could probably run oil a lot longer than the 3000 miles that everyone thinks. But the filter should definitely be changed as often as possible. They are usually less than $10 at any auto parts store. Just go get one and swap it out
Yes, the filter is where all the crap your oil picks gets stopped and if not changed it's like pouring used oil in with ur oil change.
Wow , um YES ! thats the whole point of an oil change ! lol you want a new filter !!!!
    yup

Can you mess up a Cars oil change?

Jiffy Lube wants to charge me 39.99 plus tax to do an oil change, vacuum my already clean car, and top off my already topped off fluids. Its a used car I just bought -- 2005 Nissan Sentra

If I raise my car, is an oil change as simple as

    1. unscrew a bolt

    2. Let the oil drip

    3. tighten the bolt

    4. unscrew the oil filter

    5. attach the new oil filter

    6 add more oil

Thats what my friend told me.

Is this right? Or can I mess up somewhere? Can you mess up a Cars oil change?
Thats right. But you could mess up by putting the wrong weight of oil in the car. If your car says to put 5W-30 weight oil in the engine and you put 10W30 instead then you might have a problem. Another common problem is that you could put to little or too much oil back in the car. Make sure you have the right amount of oil in the car. You can tell by the dipstick. Once last easy problem is that you could not tighten either to drain bolt or the oil filter enough and you would start leaking oil and loose oil pressure and blow your engine.

Changing your oil is a real money saver and is not too complicated. Just don't mess up on those common mistakes listed above and you will be fine. Can you mess up a Cars oil change?
a few suggestions put grease or oil on the seal of the new oil filter, take the oil filler cap off when draining for a smother flow of oil. and take the oil filter off while the drain plug is out to get a good drain. and PLEASE take the oil drain plug off with the RIGHT SIZE WRENCH, not a cresent wrench cause if you strip the top of that bolt you will kick yourself for a long time.
Well you have to make sure you have the correct oil filter. Make sure the seal comes off with the filter. Get the right amount of oil. Don't turn the filter the wrong way when you remove it. Don't forget to check for leaks. But yeah it's very easy, getting to the filter sometimes is not.
Your friend is right about that.
Other than putting in the right type and quantity of oil there is one thing and pretty much only one thing you can mess up. When you put the new filter on, first look at the slot where the old one came out, their will must likely be a rubber gasket or seal there, take it off, throw it away, your new filter has one on there already. If you put the new filter on without doing this you'll have two gaskets. This is called double gasketing it. Your oil will leak to no end and then you wont know why so you'll end up taking it to jiffy lube and getting screwed out of tons of money. Trust me, they have ways of screwing you over.
There are many ways to screw up an oil change. I have seen people do things like forgetting to put the drain plug back in or greatly overfill the crankcase.

Basically though, oil changes are pretty simple. The important part is properly getting rid of the used oil. Most auto parts stores will accept it for free. Just don't put it in a storm drain or down the sink drain.

Personally, I have changed oil hundreds of times but nowadays, it costs much less money than my effort to have it done at a ';quicklube joint';. They do more than just change the oil, they lube grease points, check and refill other fluids, and make other checks you may overlook. Well worth the cost.

Additional tips: Start and warm your engine on level ground then (after turning it off) let the oil drain for at least 15 minutes before replacing the drain plug (don't forget to replace it). Put oil on the filter gasket before installing and make sure to use the recommended oil.
thats all you have to do but do you have ramps? filter may be in a hard to reach location also. 40.00 is kind of high. try wal-mart. about 20.00 there.
Thats right but make sure the oil filter gasket comes off with the old filter. I learned the hard way. The old gasket was stuck to the block off center and I put the new filter on. Started the truck, lost oil pressure, lots of cat litter you get the idea. Another thing is that even though they make cars pretty dumb proof. Don't drain the tansmission fluid and add twice as much oil. My other learning experience when I was a kid working on my dads 66 chevy.
Go to walmart tire lube express they are alot cheaper

    $21.88 Economy Plus (Quakerstate oil)

This is only lube oil %26amp; filter service if you dont want the car lubed just tell them not to do it but it wont change the price...

    http://www.walmart.com/catalog/catalog.g鈥?/a>
The only place you could mess up is adding the wrong oil, but your right and it is that simple.

If you can use synthetic oil use it. its safer for your engine and makes it last longer.
Yes, except and jiffy lube forgets this also, make sure the bolt and filter are tight. first time you go somewhere, when getting back into the car, check and see if there is a fresh oil spot under your car.
you forgot one step put a thin layer of oil on the new oil filter gasket before you put it back on this helps when you change your oil next time the filter is easier to remove also it helps that the casket will not tear when installing it.Also grease the front end while your their.
That's pretty much it. You want to be sure to put the correct amount of oil back in, too much is just as bad as not enough. So you need to know how many quarts your car takes, because, the amount that you drain out, may be less than what it really needs, you could be a quart low, so you would need to bring the oil level up to what is required. Continue with the same grade oil also, such as 10/40, or whatever the manufacturer recommends. You can look over your own hoses, touch them and determine if they are showing wear or not. You do need to be able to get under the car, to get the filter.
your friend is right, just make sure you get the oil pan bolt tight and the filter on tight and then make sure you fill with oil until the oil stick reads full, thats all there is to it.
that's basically it. the only thing to watch is to make sure the oil filter is not too tight or too loose. after changing the oil, start the car and look underneath for anything dripping. your cost will be about $12-$15 but you have to dispose of the oil.
Yep. It's as simple as all that. Mind you for only $40, it's not such a bad deal. You'll pay about $8-$10 bucks for the filter, another $10 - $15 bucks for the oil, about 45 minutes for the oil to finish emptying the pan and another 30 minutes vacuuming out your car. You might save a total of $20 if you get the oil and filter on sale. And hopefully you already have the right sized ratchet for the plug and a filter wrench. A little helpful hint here ... put some of the fresh oil into the new filter before putting in place and smear some around the gasket. It makes for easier changing in the future.
yup your friend is right but i know people that then choke on chewing gum too

  • Does it harm the car when I go over the oil change milage?

I need to use my car (BMW) for a road trip for thanksgiving and there is not time to change the oil because the dealship is booked up and I dont do it at any other place.

The car showes that I need to change oil in 600 miles. So is i ok if I go few more miles than 600 .. and how many if possible?Does it harm the car when I go over the oil change milage?
the 3,000 miles oil changes are no longer- I try to get the oil changed when the oil life on my acura shows 5-10%. When my husband and I took a 6,177 mile road trip last May, the car was 1,962 miles past due on the oil change-we were planning to get it done in nebraska but forgot about the time change so the dealer was closed by the time we got there. another time it was 1,100 miles overdue. no problem but I try not to go that much over but with all the driving I do it sometimes is unavoidable. Before I take long trips I get my car serviced. Happy ThanksgivingDoes it harm the car when I go over the oil change milage?
BMW is one of those car that the computer tells you when to change the oil. I would go both by the computer and the last time you changed the oil. If it is more than 5K miles since you changed the oil, then I would change the oil before the trip.

You can also go to independent Euro imports specialist to change the oil. You do not have to change the oil from the dealer all the time. I would not go to quick lube places. Most of them would not even know where the oil filter is located at.
At least check the OIL level once the car has sat for a while, add if needed... It';l be just fine if you drive a LITTLE OVER.

(But don't think about doing this often)
Just check the oil and make sure it's at the proper level, it's ok to go over by a few hundred miles.
I would break down and go to an oil change place like Mr. Lube or something since you don't have time to go to the dealership...no appointments necessary and you are in and out quickly and it is inexpensive. Always good to have everything working properly when going on a road trip...better safe than sorry.
going over the mileage say 10 miles or so may not be harmful, but prolonging it may be unhelpful for the car. Infact it depends on where you live, if your area is a dusty type, its even better to do the service few miles before the stipulated mileage for service to be on the safer side. The ideal thing is to do the service promptly, its a machine you never know what will happen.

    I hope this helps.
Not a problem. Change it after your trip. You can go over by at least 1k miles.

    cheers.
It's ok to do this every once in a while. Just don't make a habit of it. Oil change is the cheapest insurance you can get, when it comes to making a car last.
NO MORE THAN 1000 MILES BECAUSE YOU WILL BE USING IT ON A ROAD TRIP DRIVING AROUND 70 TO 80 MPH.

CHECK THE LEVEL AND DRIVE SAFE.

Is it better to change your car's oil yourself or with the dealership?

It is a brand new Toyota Matrix. Is it better to change your car's oil yourself or with the dealership?
    It depends.

What is the cost of having it done at the dealership? My Chevy I get done for $14.95. Jiffy Lube can't beat that price. And in under an hour, takes a bit longer being a dealer, I get my oil changed.

Now if I did it myself. 6 quarts, plus filter, plus time, getting dirty, having to get rid of the used oil. What did I really save? Nothing. But if you are paying over $30 for the oil change, then yes its cheaper to do yourself.

Plus if you do it yourself, you really have no receipt record of having it done. Where a dealership you do have a receipt to prove later down the road that oil changes were being done. This can be handy for when its time to sell the car or for warranty issues. Is it better to change your car's oil yourself or with the dealership?
OK here is what i suggest. If the dealership itself is expensive you can go somewhere like jiffy lube or wall mart and the only reason i would suggest that because you will spend almost the same money but you will not get the same service. They are professionals and they know the exact measurements and everything and mainly because you get an overall inspection of wipers, lights, and other liquid components, of the whole vehicle for the same price of changing the oil. So its worth it and plus taking of your car the right is worth it so it lasts you a long time. The oil in a car is like blood in humans. Very important.
If your warranty requires that you keep receipts for service from authorized outlets, you might want to use a cheap oil-change place like jiffy-lube. Dealership is not necessary for these, but if your dealership does not charge much, can't hurt to let them do it.

If your warranty makes no mention of keeping required scheduled maintenance (I think they all do), then doing it your self is easy, fast and inexpensive.
If you know how, do it yourself.

You are still 100% protected on your warranty.

Dealers make a gillion per cent profit off of the naive car owners who go to the dealer and get sold a tranny flush, an intake valve spray cleaning, a finish sealant etc when they go get a simple oil change.
If you know how to do it, do it. It saves you the drive to the dealership. All you need is the right kind of car oil and your good to go.
That's up to you. If you do it yourself just be sure to check the fluid levels on every thing and grease it if it has grease fittings.
the dealership cause if something goes wrong they are responsible an wont cost you anything. as if you do it something goes wrong it comes out of your pocket.check your warranty it might effect it 2
If you know how to do it there is no difference. The people who do it at the dealership can do it at home cause they know how it's done.
Your self, way cheaper and you know everything was done right. Dealer stripped my moms oil plug and put a Cork in the hole, how retarted can they get?
In my opinion it's better to do it yourself, you'll save yourself a lot of money by doing so.
    depends on which is cheaper

What happends if a dealership does a oil change on your car and the car shuts down after you try to drive off?

i got my oil changed today and when i tried to drive off the car totally shut down and won't start. i think they may have forgetten to put oil in it or they forgot to put the filter cap back onWhat happends if a dealership does a oil change on your car and the car shuts down after you try to drive off?
Well the engien could have siezed if they did not put oil and that would require a new engine, the filler cap should not really shut down the car if it is missing. Take it back and talk to the service manager. What happends if a dealership does a oil change on your car and the car shuts down after you try to drive off?
yeah they probably screwed something up but that doesn't matter. Quite frankly it doesn't matter who's fault it is, if the car was fine when you took it in and then killed leaving the dealership you've got them. Seriously, their rocks are in a vice and you've got the handle! They need to fix it, perfectly, and put a warranty on their work, or you go to the BBB, a lawyer, the cops, anybody.

If i get a tune-up on my car, (spark plugs, oil change, timing belt, filters) what difference will i notice?

what will be different about my car? Will gas mileage be better? i have toyota camry, 1998If i get a tune-up on my car, (spark plugs, oil change, timing belt, filters) what difference will i notice?
First, better gas mileage, better accleration, smoother running engine.I think I just repeated the prevoius anwerer.Plus frequent and regular oil changes will greatly increase the life of your engineYou should at the same time have the lube checked in you transmission and rear differential, (only rear wheel drives have a rear differential), also have the suspension greased, It'll save you a lot of money in the long run.If i get a tune-up on my car, (spark plugs, oil change, timing belt, filters) what difference will i notice?
oil keeps the engine running smooothly.

    so does the filters.

the AC filter is supossed to be replaced every 30,000 miles or so (at least on a 2000 oddesey)

the timing belt will also break at some point and need replacing... idk what it does, but you need it.
Depends on how bad those parts are. You probably won't notice much if its running fine as is though if you don't maintain your car soon it won't be running fine so you should get these parts replaced in a timely manner.
Smoother ride, acceleration and better gas mileage.
    save on gas and mileage.

How much does it cost to buy oil to change the oil in your car?

Prices range from $1.75 to $4.50 a quart plus $5 to $10 for a filter. How much does it cost to buy oil to change the oil in your car?
Shouldn't cost over $20 unless you go to a dealership. Shop at places like Grismer's (I'm not sure if they are Ohio - based) but if you purchase tires there, they will rotate your tires for free for as long as you own your vehicle and a good time to have your tires rotated is when you get your oil changed (oil change there is approx $16.00) So although you are paying for an oil change, you are getting your tires rotated for free. check with other service places like Goodyear in your area and see if they offer this service. Can save you lots of $$ in the long run.How much does it cost to buy oil to change the oil in your car?
It wounld cost about $ 20.00.
There are a lot of oils to choose from. You can get cheap regular oil or cheap synthetic. You can also get higher quality regular oil or higher quality synthetic. You could spend anywhere from $10-25. If your engine holds more than 5 quarts, add a few dollars to that estimate.
This depends on what brand of oil, type of oil (synthetic, or regular), where you buy it and how much you have to buy. $10 to $15 is average for 5 or 6 quarts or regular oil.
figure $3.00 a quart and you need 5, + a new filter at $3 to 5 so you will have between $18 to $20 invested and still have to get rid of the old oil and do all the labor yourself and a garage will do it for $21.95 (GM dealership).
    about 12$

Refer to your car owners manual, it have recommendation as to what kind of oil and what type you need to use.

Also in the owners manual, it have section on how to change your engine oil, the procedures.I want to change my car engine oil?
if you have been using a synthetic stay with it - if not the 10w30 - works ...
Make sure you can get to the oil filter. You will also need an oil filter wrench. On one of my vehicles it is almost impossible to get to the filter, so I take that in to get an oil change. The others are easy to get to the oil filter, and I do it. It only takes about 10 to 15 minutes and saves you 40 to 50 bucks. Good luck. Don't worry (my opinion) about the oil. 10-30, 10-40. I know there are car perfectionists who will argue over what is best. A 92 Camry, use whatever. They are good engines (usually) and can take it.
I'd use a 5w-30 in any good name brand.....this means quaker state, and pennzoil.... the old wives tale of them forming sludge is pretty stupid.... I remember one guy ran his chevy truck over one million, on pennzoil.... pennzoil owns quaker state.... they are BOTH owned by shell. btw, I know many others that use nothing but these two oils, many miles... little to no varnish, no sludge...

Just use a name brand 5w-30.... synthetic in that old of a car may be asking for trouble, synthetic's in a already leaking car (I don't know about yours if its leaking) or damaged seals that conventional oil WILL no show through, might worsen with synthetics.... synthetics are however safe to mix with conventional, and engine seals (they don't eat em) engines raised up on say mobil one, don't leak... b tw, castrol syntec is a group 3 hydrocracked petroleum, good oil! but overpriced, its priced right near mobil one prices, Mobil ones a true pao syn. Pennzoil has a new syn out using a eop base.. called pennzoil platinum.

And don't use flushes, most quick flushes are just kerosene.... these don't clean all that well.... but may knock big chunks of sludge loose and clog the oil pump...... and don't use fram oil filters.....overpriced cheap quality. cut one open to see for yourself......
I've had good luck with Castrol. I've been running it for years. Stay away from Quaker State. Mobil One is good but a little costly. If you've just picked this car up you might want to add some oil cleaner to it before you change the oil? There is an additive that you add to the old oil to thin out any deposits that have built up inside the engine and oil pan. You just add it in and warm up the engine for about 15 min. DON'T drive the car with it in it. After the engine is warmed up and shut off, all you need to do is drain it out and replace the filter and add in the new oil.
Castrol Magnatec I found to be excellent 156,000 miles in a Ford, which I gave my nephew when I came here, it's still going strong.
if your toyota has more 100k miles dont use multigrade oil, sintetic high miles 40

But knowing the job was done right....pricelessDo i have to drain the oil in my car before i change the oil filter?
You can change the filter without draining the oil first but why? If you intend to change the filter without changing the oil then this is possible but would only make sense if you had recently done an oil change and then the filter had been damaged. Note that if you change the filter only then you will still need to add new oil to replace that lost in the old filter.

If you are changing oil and filter then the optimum procedure is to drain the oil when the engine is warm, change the filter, remember to replace the oil drain plug and refill with fresh oil.

Changing the filter more frequently than the oil does not make sense. It makes more sense to change the oil twice per filter change.
you can change the filter without changing the oil and vice versa, however neither one is a good idea. changing the filter won't help your oil condition much as the dark in the oil is carbon that is already too small for your filter to process. the filter just gets out the big stuff.

on the other hand, changing the oil without the filter means there is no good cleaning element for your oil and there will be fouled oil still in the filter meaning you'll start out with dirty oil

as for oil in the face. on nearly every car the top of the filter is higher than the top of the oil reservoir, thus the amount of oil spill from the filter is not related to draining the oil from the car first.
you can do it either way. you can change the filter first or drain the oil first but either way both needs to be changed when you change the oil. all the oil will come out is what,s in the filter when you take it off and the most of the oil is in the oil pan so you can do it either way but change both the oil and filter of you will just be leaving a quart of dirty oil in the engine if you don,t change the filter too.
it all depends on which kind of oil filter you have or where it sits, take a volkswagen for example, the filter housing is located in front of the engine sitting upright, you can take the housing off and replace the filter with next to no spillages, other cars are different but you never stated what you drive
Yes you need to drain the oil, disconnect the oil filter change that then fill your car back up with the proper amount of oil (check the owner manual. Be sure to tighten the oil plug and filter.
You can but if your filter needs changed you oil is dirty and needs changed. The filter is above the oil in the pan so by taking the filter off all the oil won't come out.
You could do but it would be very advisable to change the oil at the same time , change the filter without the oil would be like changing your clothes when dirty but not showering
    change the filter after draining

    http://autorepair.about.com/od/regularma鈥?/a>
You can change the oil filter first if you want...but it'll be messy lol. you should change the oil filter WITH changing the oil.
wel you dont have to drain oil but why replace filter and not the oil or other way oil an dnot filter as well like washing your feet and putting on dirty socks
Its best to drain the oil first before changing the filter. Easier and much cleaner that way.
No, it doesn't matter. Unless you decide to have the car running while changing the filter. LOL. These people are crazy.
no, but you can really avoid a mini exxon valdez if you do.
That's whats best to do. You could also Google or Ask Jeeves what to do.
The short answer is yes you can
You should drain the oil first unless you want a face full of oil.
    yes please.
depends how you spend your pennies, and what you do with your time.i have been know to change the filter by itself, but the oil there after.time can be of the essence..

I bought a used car and the oil was last changed on december of 2006, should i change the oil?

The car has 71,000 miles and the next oil change is due when the car has 72,000 miles but the last oil change was about a year and some months ago. I noticed that when I drive the car sometimes it starts shaking, kinda like it wants to stop. Auto machanics have checked the car and say they don't find anything wrong. Could it be the oil that causes the car to shake sometimes i use it?I bought a used car and the oil was last changed on december of 2006, should i change the oil?
';NO MATTER WHAT!'; Never Go Past 10 Months on an Oil %26amp; Filter Change!! Also have the System Flushed!I bought a used car and the oil was last changed on december of 2006, should i change the oil?
(YES) averry 6 monuth's of havey use's! teran-z all so
I doubt the oil does that but you should go ahead and change it. Cars under 15 years old typically only need oil changed every 5000 miles unless you drive stop and go constantly, then 3000. But for now go ahead and get it changed. I would find a different mechanic to find the source of the shaking; that isn't right to be doing that.
    no but change the oil
Yes, please change it, every 3,000 miles or 3 months, which ever comes first. Unless the car has synthetic.
no shaking cause by lack of oil change unless internal engine component has a failure. at least change oil once a year. ideally every 3 months or 3000 miles, with everday driving.
I dont know about the shakes but you are to change your oil every 3000 mi or 3 months, whatever comes first. I would be to be on the safe side. Sounds like it has sat awhile, so maybe moisture is in it.

The shakeing might be from moisture in the gas tank, try some ';HEET'; in it first or some type of gas stabilizer.
wouldn't have anything to do with the oil change.

try a set of spark plugs
It wouldn't hurt to change the oil, just for piece of mind. It sounds more likely that you have a fuel problem though, with the car shaking and wanting to stall.
please change every 3000 miles are 3 months shaking could be anything like just replaceing fuel filter and i would strongly recommend that if you have that long on your oil you do complete tune up plugs wire cap button, pvc valve fuel filter
    Change the oil.

    It's an inexpensive maintenance procedure.

If you didn't change it and a mechanical failure occurred before 72000 you'd be out a lot more $.

Many sources recommend changing the oil every 3-5 thousand miles or every 3-4 months which ever comes first.

Your car is way overdue based on the time the oil was changed last.

    The shaking? I don't know?
    yes change it.
I really don't know what to tell you...I have a ford explorer and it used to shake then the drive shaft sheared off the rear and I managed to find a replacement part and changed it out myself and all the shaking and alot of the noises stopped. If you have a front wheel drive vehicle this will not be your problem. Take it to a mechanic not to the people that sold it to you and have them run a diagnostic check. It might be something as simple as a fuel filter. Good luck!

Is it true on a brand new car you should change the oil at 1,000 miles?

I have read that you should change the oil at 1,000 miles on a new car because when the engine's breaking in it tends to deposit particles from the break-in into the oil. Is this true?Is it true on a brand new car you should change the oil at 1,000 miles?
Oils have improved so much over the past 10yrs, I would recommend doing it at the mfg. period.. Any earlier is generally a waste of money!! If you plan on keeping a car/truck for 200-300 thousand miles w/out a rebuild then go for it.. But in 15 yrs in auto parts I've never seen an engine fail due to OIL.. Nowaday's it the timing belt..Is it true on a brand new car you should change the oil at 1,000 miles?
you won't find any manufacturer recommending it, but on a personal note I would...that way you have the brand of oil AND the brand of oil filter you prefer right from the start...

It really is a personal thing, but many of us mechanical types are like that :-)
It's not a requirement but I do. Imagine how much garbage some bum at a ford assembley line may leave behind, and even though I don't drive a ford, I still find it reasonable to change oil after about first thousand miles.
When I put a new crate motor in my Chevrolet 3500 HD, they changed the oil at 500 miles the first time.
It used to be that manufacturers used a special break-in oil that needed to be replaced at 500 miles. Today, you won't see any mention about it in your owner's manual - it will say change at 3000/7500 depending upon driving conditions, but I would highly recommend changing at 500 miles. Put in a conventional oil, then change again at 3000 miles with a fully synthetic.

Is it possible to change the oil on a car and not change the oil filter?

What are the potential problems that might happen if the oil filter wasn't changed but the oil was during an oil change? Is it possible to change the oil on a car and not change the oil filter?
Yes, but you car will not have sufficient protection as with a new filter. If you like spending money on new engines or new vehicles, then fine. A filter that is half way blocked with debris will not last long as the new oil will soon not be able to pass through the filter and the engine will soon wear out. A couple of thousand miles, maybe more, but to be honest, only a fool would attempt it.

    Good Luck.

Dr AntonyIs it possible to change the oil on a car and not change the oil filter?
Yes it is possible. However the new oil's potential will not be out to use as the old filter clogs the system of the old dirt. If you can buy new oil, why not also put a little extra for the new filter. as to the dangers of it, I haven't encountered it yet as I simultaneously change the oil and the filter.
What's the point of changing your oil if you're going to do a half-fast job?

Oils collect contaminants over time including dirt, metal particles, and acids - all of which cause engine wear. Leaving the filter leaves a filter full of dirty oil and a filter full of stuff that you don't want leaching back into your fresh oil.

Filters also have a bypass valve that opens when the filter becomes clogged enough to restrict the flow. That effectively gives you no filtering whatsoever.

    Filters are cheap. Engines ain't.

    Don
    Anything is possible!

Why don't you save by just driving your car 6,000mi. between oil changes, then you'll save on oil too!

Which is cheaper the oil or the oil filter?

The oil filter, so your going to be there so why not do them both?

The answer too your question is yes

the average oil filter was designed too last two oil change intervals.

with no problems (its just not recommended anymore)

Because of the stupid people-It's a long story-the old time techs' will know what I mean.
im not a mechanic but changing oil without changing ur oil filter should be ok but depending on wen is da last time u change da oil filter.....it only cost less den $10 and do it urself...it's easy actually i just did my oil change...i use Mobil 1 fully synthetic oil and Mobil 1 oil filter...my oppinion i say it's better off doin da complete oil change cuz after miles of running da filter gets clogged up and it wont perform da way it suppose to....full oil change recommend: fresh oil, and oil filter plus u can change da drain plug but i didnt if it dont need to, 3k-5k miles depending on ur driving condition... like i said im not a mechanic but i do about 90% of da work myself including full oil change......i say just change da oil filter it only takes a minute........
yes you dont have to change the oild filter every service its just recomended for best preventative maintenance.
Sure, but why would you? Cheap insurance.......

When is a oil change needed in a car?

I have a 09 honda civic sedan, and it has 1300 miles so far. i wanted to know whens a good time to give it an oil change. its been 7 months since i got the car. Its new by the way. When is a oil change needed in a car?
At least once a year or 6000 milesWhen is a oil change needed in a car?
Usually most modern day cars give you a 5000 mile window....I wouldn't go much beyond that however....if you only have 1300 miles after 7 months...it's probably not a good idea to let the oil change wait in a car that doesn't get driven much....7 months sounds like a lot.

Also....I would be willing to bet that you have an oil change interval guide somewhere in your owners manual...so...you can follow that as well...but...if it still says 3000 miles...nowadays....that just isn't necessary because of the improvements in modern automotive technology.
right now don't wait for miles, oil gets acid from non use..dump it every 3 months regardless of mileage
    every 10,000 miles

When i took my car for oil change , the guy asked me to change all the belts,as they are getting dry..?

What belts will be there in Nissan sentra, 1999. and how much do they cost..When i took my car for oil change , the guy asked me to change all the belts,as they are getting dry..?
you should have let him show you why the belts needed changed and then looked at them and if you see cracks in the belt or belts then they need replaced. When i took my car for oil change , the guy asked me to change all the belts,as they are getting dry..?
actually, he may be right. you can check easily enough though. you should have a serpentine belt, although nissan did continue to use a separate belt for the AC long after most companies went to a single belt.

look at the belt, the manufacturers instruction is that a serpentine belt be replaced if there are 4 or more cracks per inch. if there are, replace it, if not, don't. i have had people refuse them when i worked in a shop, i've also had people come back to me for radiator and other repairs when a belt let go after refusing to replace it.

as for 'not being done', that is illegal and any shop that did that frequently would be put out of business.

on your car, b/c it's a front wheel drive, the belts will be on your left, the right side of the car, when you open the hood.
it would be a good idea to get them changed about every 30,000-40,000 miles because once the belt dries out it has a greater chance of breaking and when it breaks a lot of things then dont work like power steering, the alternator to charge the battery, water pump to cool the engine and they wont work untill u get the belt replaced so when it breaks your car will overheat in a couple minuets after it breaks, and it will be hard to steer and your battery will eventually go dead
if your belts are dry and cracked, yes they will need replaced. over time, the rubber breaks down and tears. if left unmaintained, it can cause the belt to actually break and fall off. this is no fun if you're in the middle of a turning maneuver and you loose power steering. it'll cause the vehicle to overheat and the battery to die. but if there are no visible cracks, they're fine
i would take a look at the belts and if it has little cracks on the ribbed side then it is likely the belt is old or dry and could fail at any time. a lot of imports have two to three belts running separate components so a belt change if it is necessary could be pricey
Tell him to change the oil and leave the belts alone. this is a good rip off, you pay for belts that don't get installed or aren't needed. I would guess you have a serpentine belt that is a single belt. Get out of there and find an honest oil changer.
if you have more then 1 belt they are about $ 8.00 a piece and if it's 1 belt only it could be 20 to 30 bucks. The belt/s are in the front of the motor and look at them for cracks that tells you they are bad.
that would be up to you if you want the belts changed. maybe they are bad and maybe they are just trying to get more money off of you. i,am sorry but i don,t trust some of these so called mechanics.

  • Can an overdue oil change do permanent damage to a car engine?

My girlfriend's car is about 4,000 miles overdue for an oil change due to a lack of funds. We should be able to get it done fairly soon, but is it possible that permanent damage will have been done to the engine, or any other part of the car? If it is important, it is a Volkswagen Beetle that's about 4-6 years old.Can an overdue oil change do permanent damage to a car engine?
That's the fastest way to ruin an engine. More friction in the engine wears it down faster. If you don't do anything else - oil/filter changes every 5000 miles should be done to protect the engine. Oil loses it's viscosity and doesn't function when it's overused.

    1) You will literally get better fuel economy with clean fresh oil.

    2) It will start getting past the rings when the cylinder walls wear more from the increased friction caused by old oil. When it starts getting past the rings it gets in the combustion chamber and starts to burn - causing smoke and even worse economy. Can an overdue oil change do permanent damage to a car engine?
Once wear takes place in your engine from the dirty oil, there is no way to repair it without taking it apart. I suggest you do the oil change yourself - it's much cheaper than going to a service place like Jiffy Lube. You can take the used oil to Shucks or Kragen (depending on your area) and they recycle it for free so there is no disposal charge. You don't want to put it in the trash.

If you can't afford the oil, you can't afford to put the gas in it to drive it.
When oil gets too old, the viscosity in the oil breaks down....Long term damage can result....

Example:...in the summer your oil thins out because of the heat..

In winter, it thickens a bit....

Be sure to use the proper grade of oil in your car. Only what the manual suggests you should use.

if it's 10W30...don't use 10W40 no matter the price difference.
Just make sure she has checked how much oil she has and if its below put a few quarts in. As long as the car isnt running on NO oil it wont cause damage.
If it is an old Beetle you might be all right (very strong) but I would change the oil before you have to change to motor
    It is possible, but unlikely.

You may call your local Triple A. They can provide you with some info. Also in Yahoo under your local settings if you type in mechanic or car washes you will get results. Many customers can respond to these and leave an opinion regarding their experience with each listing. Purchased 1996 lexus owner statedcar needed brakes and oil change car needs transmission whatcan i do?

Next Day car started havings problems call the person to advise her she said she would not give money back. orignal deal I was to give her 1000.00 and drivecar for a week but I paid all money that day.North Ga Toyota states that car need a transmission which cost 1800.00 we signed agreement that the brakes and oil change was all the car needed and my brother signed as witness.IS there anything I can DoPurchased 1996 lexus owner statedcar needed brakes and oil change car needs transmission whatcan i do?
If you made an agreement that you could run the car for a week, I would say it doesn't matter if you paid in full. the argument would be if you have a receipt saying ';as is';. then you'll have trouble getting back any money. call one of those ';Free Consultation'; lawyers. you have nothing to lose. Good Luck.Purchased 1996 lexus owner statedcar needed brakes and oil change car needs transmission whatcan i do?
I don't know which state your in, and what rules apply. But I am sure your court system is close to ours. This will go into the small claims department. To get a lawyer is not going to be practical because of cost. You can go to your court house, and get the papers for filling a claim (fraud or misrepresent) against this party. There is a filing fee, but I believe this is your best avenue. Breaking bones isn't practical anymore. The District Attorney's office may be able to assist you by advising you. I'm afraid that this is morally wrong, but not legally wrong. People are not always nice. I hope this is not abuse but a honest call. Let the Judge sort it out. Good luck!
Sounds like you'll be taking her to court if she wont honor your deal, AND you have a contract with her that doesnt say ';AS-IS'; or anything like that, just that it needed oil and brakes. Was kind of dumb of you to give her all the money that day however.

But if it were me... is the car in good shape? If all it needed was a transmission and a brake job, and the engine and body was in good shape along with everything else, i'd find someplace cheap to do the work.

Never get a dealer to do work, they always overcharge, get a tranny rebuild and new brakes new tires, all fluid flushed and a tuneup, in $2000 and a few weeks time you'll have a very nice car, and I think $3000 would be worth it for a lexus.
';AS IS'; meansjust that. As it is! She saw you coming.
    1. Get a second opinion from another reputable repair shop.

    2. If the contract stated ';as is';, it's your problem.

    3. If you have the paper that states the only problems, you can file in small claims court if it was NOT ';as is.';

    Good luck.

My car's engine oil light came on, can a oil change help?

Not the check oil light because my oil is full, but the light that looks like a tea pot and the image on the oil dipstick. The manual says it can be because the oil is not traveling to the engine fast enough. Can this be solved with an oil change and filter? My car's engine oil light came on, can a oil change help?
oil pump needs to be replaced....DONT DRIVE Engine will sieze up and car will be huge paperweightMy car's engine oil light came on, can a oil change help?
First off don't drive your car with the little ';Tea thing on'; it means your oil pump isn't pumping your car is about to blow up. Yes like the godfather. No oil change, it's real mechanic time not Jiffy Lube either. If you value your car at all you'll get it fixed fast. Yes there is oil there but it's not being pumped so it's like it's not there at all. Get your oil pump replaced ';Now';.
Oh no! Oil pressure is too low. DON'T DRIVE IT, or you will ruin the engine. Or ir might be a bad sensor, but it is not worth the risk, take it in now, an oil change probably will not help, unless you' havent had one in forever and the filter is badly plugged, but thats very unlikely.

How do you change car oil?

First read your manual and find out how much and what kind of oil your car needs. This is very important on newer cars whose tolerance is so small.

Then go to the autoparts store and ask for a filter for your car and get the oil you need. You should also have an oil filter wrench. I reccomebd the ring kind not the kind tha fits over the top ore the visegrip kind.

You might also want to get something conviniant to catch the oil in and tote it around. You will need to take it back to a place that collects old oil.

Then get on your back and find the drain plug. Wait till you car is cool though. Undo the plug and let the oil drain into the pan you got. Next you need to find your oil filter. You have a new one so you should be able to look for something the same shape. it may be a different color though.

Turn the old filter counter clock wise. be ready though oil will come out a small amount anyway.

Turn it over on your drain pan and let the rest run out of the filter.

Put a small amount of oil on your finger and rub the gasket on the new filter. Put it where the old one was and hand tighten only. If it is easy to do without spilling oil you you should also prime the filter by pouring some oil into it.

Replace the filter and the drain plug. Fill you car oil fill (under the hood) to the recommended amount. Replace the cap. I have forgotten to do that a couple of times. Boy did my wife get mad when her car was smoking.

Mkae sure to take your oil and filter to a place which collects them. Usually most chain autoparts stores will.

MHow do you change car oil?
There's a cap at the bottom of the engine that you unscrew to drain the old oil outta the engine and into a pan or smth. That can get quite messy. Check car manual on how much oil the engine has.How do you change car oil?
You can get an oil change done by any garage for less than it will cost you to do it yourself. It's one of those jobs that is messy and time consuming if you try to do it yourself: you need a special tool to remove the oil filter, you have to get a sealable pan to recycle the old oil etc...

Using Flush Oil before oil change in your car engine is effective?

A WASTE of money, Snake oil.

    read this:

The only people who recommend it is people who sell it, or people who used the stuff and do not want to admit they wasted the money.

If your oil is black and been in the engine for a couple of thousand miles, the oil is doing what it supposed to.

Years ago I would put half quart of AFT (automatic transmission fluid) in the crankcase and run the engine for 5-10 minutes. Then drain and fill it with fresh oil. The old engine guys swore by it.

Many new car warranties will be voided by using any engine flush

especially aluminum engines, Saturn specifically warns you not to use them.

don't do it if it has a lot of miles on itUsing Flush Oil before oil change in your car engine is effective?
depends on how many miles on engine
    no
you might do more damnage than good,,, in alot of high mile cars the sludge build up helps ,, once you flush it you'll get a hole in you oil pan all the sudden some day,,,, same with transmitions..the sludge helps the strenth of the worn out thin metel ..
    I don't recommend doing this
If you just took ownership or its been a while since you changed your oil I would recomend it.
It is effective but, ONLY use if absolutely necessary. A well maintained engine will NEVER need oil flushing.
Actually, I use deisel fuel. About once a year or once every two years I will drain the oil, put on a new oil filter, fill with deisel fuel, run at idle for a few minutes (3-5), drain and repeat. Then replace oil filter again, and fill with oil. My oil stays golden for the entire life (about 5K) and after a year it will start to get dark again when it's nearing service time. Dark oil is caused by slug and carbon in the engine. The deisel fuel helps break this up. It's pretty important to me because these new engines using cast alum. oil pans have silicone for gaskets. The silicone gets on the pickup screen on the oil pump and tends to restrict oil circulation. The deisel fuel will clean the screen and all of that gunk will drop to the bottom of the pan when you flush it. Try it and you'll see. Definitely don't buy any of that crap they sell though. Just use deisel fuel. Good luck.

  • I had an oil change done and the people forgot to put oil in my car, what kind of damage could have been done?

call your local news channel ibvestigation and tell them , the oil change place will definately fix the car than , it depends on how long you drove with out noticing !I had an oil change done and the people forgot to put oil in my car, what kind of damage could have been done?
How long can a human live without any blood in their body? Oil is the blood of an engine, without it metal parts spin and rub against each other causing extreme wear and metal shavings that will get circulated throughout your engine and cause extensive damage. I would get oil in it, have a mechanic check it at their expense, then change the oil after a few days and check for those metal particles. If they are present, insist they replace your engine,it is dying. Get managers names and document everything you can.I had an oil change done and the people forgot to put oil in my car, what kind of damage could have been done?
if they didnt put any oil in your engine, you should have known that as soon as you started your car, your oil light should have stayed on. depends on how far you driven the car, what damage it could have done. the bearings could have got bad, and thrown a rod. first thing about taking it to a small claims court, you have to prove they didnt put any oil in it and their attorney will probably ask you why didnt you tell them and so on, and so on.in other words, its your word against theirs. right there is 1 of the reasons i do my own work, i dont trust them as far as i can throw my car.
This all depends on how long it was running befor oil was put back in. if ti was only ran for a short peirod of time (under 2min.)nothing. but if it were ran for longer than that you could have warped the piston rings and cylinder walls, if you drove it for more than 10min you could do some seirous dammage including seising you engine which means that you engine is dead,or you could incounter a rod knock, which means that the piston seprated it self from the crank.
a cars engine needs oil to run smooth without oil gears grind an burn up if its been running without oil for a long time it would burn out the engine causing a lot of damage on the engine so if u got it done at a shop and there is damage done it would be their responsibility for the damage done
Totally an unforgivable failure of the repair shop. You should demand no less than a new replacement engine and go to small claims court to get it. Their best technicians should be overseeing such critical engine maintenance.
serious damage... piston ring wear... lifter wear... heat stress on heads and block ... you would have heard the problem immediately upon starting the car ...hopefully they shut it down immediately
none if it wasn't started and driven away.

They owe you a NEW engine if they sentyou away with it empty.
none...you must have heard racket it made and shut it off right away.... a few secounds will not hurt.

How often should you change your car's engine oil?

I know someone that changes it every 3 months no matter how many miles she drives. Even after 1000 miles, she'll change it. Is she wasting her money? She drives conservatively, mild weather, normal driving conditions, etc.

Thanks. How often should you change your car's engine oil?
Oil starts breaking down @ 1700 miles, but breaks down a lot faster if not driven because moisture contaminates the oil and since not driven ( to remove contamination) the oil only gets worse. So no she is not wasting money, plus you cannot change your oil too much. Your are only protecting the engine that much more. How often should you change your car's engine oil?
The old rule of thumb has been every 3 months or 3,000 miles, whichever comes FIRST.

however, recent studies have shown that you can easily go 5,000 miles, with no time restraint and be absolutely fine.

I always go by the mileage, and have owned my car for 5 years with no major problems (and put 130,000 miles on it)
every 6 months or 3000 miles (which ever comes first) and the filter has to be changed every other oil change.
Which ever comes last. 12/9 I was suppose to change my oil but I have only used 1,500 miles. I spoke with my dad who was a manager of goodyear and he said that I do not need to change it until I hit 3,000 miles or even 4,000. Just always make sure there is oil in your car. That is the important part.
With modern cars and modern oil the 3,000 oil change is not necessary. I still do it on the cars I have that were built in the '70s but on newer cars I follow the manufacturers recommendations. For my '94 Honda it is 7500 miles.
The oil changing period is determined in part by where and how you drive. If the vehicle is used for only short trips and never gets warmed up then sludge will occur and you need to change it sooner. If you drive a distance where the engine gets fully warmed up and on the highway the oil burns off impurities and lasts alot longer. That said oil is cheap insurance for an expensive part of your car, the motor. If you can't always change it when you should, it's better to buy synthetic base oil when you do change it
    3000 or 6 months..is fine,,,3 months is a waste of $...i change my oil every 5000...
here is what I do. I use mobile 1 and fram filters, I change the oil and filter lets say at 50k then at 55k I change the filter and add a quart of new mobile 1 then at 60k I do a complete oil and filter change. I keep doing this as long as I have the car, so far I have 131k on the engine and it runs fine in fact I will be leaving on a 2k trip with it next month. Ask your dad or grandpa how often they changed oil in the 50's no one changed oil like they do now and some of those old engines are still running. The oil co's love all you oil changers. All I can say is it works for me.
    every 3 months r 3000 miles
Your owners manual will have the info.

Many cars it's like 6 or 7k miles.

Environmentally speaking, you should change it according to your owners manual.

For me, when 3k pass, i try to remember to get in for an oil change.

And like an earlier poster mentioned, be sure to keep the oil levels in the safe zone.
