If i change the car oil myself, can i leave on the old filter?

i dont want to go buy an oil filter clamp, but its a 3hour wait to get the oil changed at the shop. i can change the oil myself but not the filter. can it just wait until the next oil change? 97 dodge neon, driven about 100 miles weeklyIf i change the car oil myself, can i leave on the old filter?
Can you? Yes. It's certainly not the best option, since the approximately one quart of oil soaked up in the old filter will get mixed with the new oil. If it's just to tie you over until the next change, it's probably better than no oil change at all.If i change the car oil myself, can i leave on the old filter?
i dont think it would be a good idea. your supposed to change that every time you change the oil in the car. oil filter clamps arent too expensive anyways and you could save money by buying it and just keep doing the oil service yourself each time.
you would be fine by missing this one but with what was said before, the filter tools is fairly cheap, 3 bucks maybe...
A lot of car owners manuals will advise you to change the oil every 6000 miles and the filter every other oil change, but every mechanic I have talked to say to change it every 3000 miles and change the oil filter each time. So, you can leave it be for now, but do change it at some point.

I don't know how hard it is to access the filter on your Neon, but it is possible to change the filter without a filter wrench. Just take a Phillips-head screwdriver and stab it THROUGH the side of the filter (it's thin metal, it will go in if you push hard). Now you have the screwdriver handle sticking out of the filter, and you can use it as a handle to unscrew the oil filter. Put on the new filter using just your fingers, not a tool.

By the way, even if you spend a bunch on a filter wrench, you will make that back up after just 2 or 3 self-oil-changes, so you should definitely get one.
